Mom is a Pacifier.
Not only does your newborn’s stomach fit just enough to keep him going for about 3 hours without feeding at a time, but he might want to stay latched on or take little sips all day. However, that can make you feel like you’re on the couch all day without breaks when it comes to your breastfed baby. Here’s how to provide them with ALL the love they need:
Before you unbutton your shirt, ask yourself if he’s just craving contact. Front carriers and slings can give him the contact that he needs while freeing up your arms for a few moments.
Try Giving a Pacifier: If he has been feeding well and gaining weight, try using the pacifier after he’s finished nursing. Some babies love to nurse, but eventually, they just suck on their mouths without getting anything to, eat. Your doctor can help you make sure that’s what it is.
Keep his body awake and active. If he’s drifting off to sleep, place him into a crib for a nap. If he’s awake, offer a binky before distracting him with an activity like reading a book or going for a walk.
When he’s a little older, you won’t have to worry about him wanting to nurse constantly. For now though, if you don’t mind sitting in a comfy chair all day, grab some good books and get comfortable.
As a breastfeeding mother, I experienced an uncomfortable abundance of milk and difficulties like breast infections. A pacifier would have helped me with the pressure and break from breastfeeding.
Do’s and don’ts when dealing with your little sucker! (The Do’s and Don’ts)
Do's | Don'ts |
Snuggle | Underestimate your strengths |
Give him a diaper or clothing change if he’s uncomfortable. | Ignore a newborn with crying. |
Occupy him with something fun | Don't Blame yourself |
Offer the pacifier or give the thumb | If you're nursing, you should stop. It will take time for both of you to adjust, and your pediatrician can offer some guidance. |
Hand him out to grandma or daddy. | Don't use a pacifier as a first line of defense. |
